Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to Common Questions

Getting Started

How do I book a session?

You can contact us directly via email or phone. If you’re unsure whether counselling is right for you, I offer a free 15-minute consultation to answer any questions and see if we’re a good fit.

Do you offer a free consultation?

Yes! I offer a free 15-minute phone or video consultation. This gives us a chance to connect, discuss your needs, and explore how I can support you before committing to a session.

What can I expect in the first session?

Our first session is about getting to know you—your story, what brings you to therapy, and what you hope to gain. We’ll move at your pace, ensuring you feel safe and supported. There’s no pressure to share more than you’re comfortable with.

About Counselling

What issues do you specialize in?

I specialize in working with trauma, addiction, anxiety, and depression. My approach integrates Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), attachment theory, and somatic modalities to create a personalized and holistic healing experience.

What is your approach to counselling?

I believe that healing begins with trust and safety. My counselling style is collaborative, compassionate, and trauma-informed. I integrate authenticity, curiosity, and a touch of humor to help you navigate your experiences in a way that feels empowering.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your goals, history, and the pace you feel comfortable with. Some people find short-term support helpful, while others prefer longer-term counselling. We’ll work together to determine what feels right for you.

Logistics & Fees

How much do sessions cost?

Session rates are $140 for 50 minutes (individuals) and $155 for 50 minutes (couples). If cost is a concern, please reach out—we may be able to explore options like sliding scale rates.

Do you accept insurance?

Many extended health plans cover sessions with a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC). I recommend checking with your provider to confirm your coverage. I will provide a receipt for services that can be submitted to your insurance for reimbursement if counselling is included.

What is your cancellation policy?

I require at least 24 hours notice for cancellations or rescheduling. Late cancellations or missed appointments may be subject to the full session fee.

In-Person & Online Counselling

How does online counselling work?

Sessions take place over a secure video platform, allowing you to access support from the comfort of your home. All you need is a private space, a reliable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone.

Is online counselling as effective as in-person counselling?

Yes! Research shows that online therapy can be just as effective as in-person sessions. Many clients find it convenient, accessible, and comfortable.

Do you offer in-person sessions?

In-person is available only in Nanaimo, BC at this time. Clients in other areas of BC can access our services virtually.

Miscellaneous

What if I don’t know what to talk about in a session?

That’s completely okay. Sessions don’t need to follow a set structure. We can start wherever you are—whether it’s processing emotions, exploring past experiences, or just taking a moment to breathe. You don’t have to have it all figured out; we’ll navigate it together.

How do I know if you’re the right counsellor for me?

Finding the right counsellor is like finding the right cup of tea. There is green, black, white, oolong, pu-erh… you get the idea. If you do not like the first cup you try, it does not mean tea is not for you! I encourage you to trust your instincts—if something feels like a good connection, that’s a great start. If you’re unsure, our free consultation can help you decide.

What if I’ve had a bad experience with therapy before?

I hear you. If past therapy didn’t feel safe or helpful, that can be hard to navigate. My approach prioritizes creating a space where you feel heard, validated, and in control of your healing process. For this reason, it is often beneficial to explore these past experiences to help inform the healing space we create together.
