Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is offered at The Counselling HUB in Nanaimo for individuals struggling with intense emotions, impulsivity, and relationship conflicts. DBT is a highly structured, skills-based approach.

The word 'dialectical' means holding two seemingly opposite truths at the same time: accepting yourself exactly as you are, while also acknowledging that you need to change. For people who feel emotions very intensely and have a hard time calming down, DBT provides a practical toolkit. It moves beyond just talking about problems to actively teaching you how to handle them.

DBT is widely recognized and extensively researched as an evidence-based treatment for emotional dysregulation, borderline personality disorder, self-harm, and substance use. In our sessions, we focus on four core skill modules. First, Mindfulness helps you stay present and grounded.

Second, Distress Tolerance teaches you how to survive a crisis without making it worse. Third, Emotion Regulation helps you understand and manage intense feelings. Finally, Interpersonal Effectiveness provides strategies for asking for what you need and saying no, while maintaining your self-respect and relationships.

Ready to Take the First Step?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is available in person in Nanaimo and virtually across Vancouver Island. Book a session or consultation through our online portal to get started.

We will review specific situations from your week and practice applying these skills to them. DBT is most beneficial for individuals who feel overwhelmed by their emotions, struggle with impulsive behaviors, or have intense, unstable relationships. It is ideal for clients who want concrete, actionable tools rather than open-ended exploration.

While comprehensive DBT programs can take a year, we often integrate DBT skills into individual therapy to provide immediate relief and practical strategies. If you are looking for a way to gain control over your emotional responses, DBT can offer a clear path forward.

This approach is often used in trauma counselling and individual counselling. To talk through whether it fits what you are experiencing, book a consultation online.
